Lumbee Guaranty Bank Announces the Appointment of a New Director

Pembroke, NC – 3/9/2018 – Lumbee Guaranty Bank (the “Bank”) is pleased to announce that effective February 22, 2018, Wyatt Upchurch was appointed to the Board of Directors. The addition of Mr. Upchurch further strengthens the business expertise represented at the Board level and brings representation from the Hoke/Cumberland markets of the Bank.

Mr. Upchurch has had a long and distinguished career in agribusiness that spanned nearly six decades. Born in Lee County, NC, Mr. Upchurch journeyed from the family farm to N.C. State University and then began a career that eventually led him to start a turkey breeder operation and hatchery with his wife, Mary. The Upchurches grew this business to an operation that produced 15 million turkeys annually and 350,000 eggs a week. Based in Raeford, they later expanded the company into swine production and employed over 200 people before selling their business interests. Mr. Upchurch has served as president of the National Turkey Federation and is a member of the N.C. Poultry Federation Hall of Fame.

Mr. Upchurch has been actively engaged in community service and philanthropy throughout his life and continues to do so. Mr. Upchurch served ten years as a commissioner for Hoke County. He also served on the boards of the Raeford-Hoke Chamber of Commerce, the Lumber River Council of Governments, the N.C. Southeast Economic Development Board, and the Hoke County Economic Development Board and chaired several of those boards on multiple occasions. Mr. Upchurch continues to serve as a director on the Lumbee River Electric Membership Corporation board.

Recently, Mr. and Mrs. Upchurch celebrated their 64thwedding anniversary. Just a few weeks afterward, UNC-Pembroke announced a $1 million gift to the School of Business from Mr. and Mrs. Upchurch to honor their late son, Wyatt Jeffery, who passed away in 1976 at age 16 after battling leukemia.

Commenting on the addition of Mr. Upchurch to the Board, Chairman Arnold Locklear stated, “Mr. Upchurch brings a wealth of business experience and a proven record of community service leadership to the Board of Directors, which will be beneficial to the bank as we continue to provide our shareholders a solid return on their investment and our customers with the best products and personalized services that are available today”.
